I have a .avi file that has subtitles hardcoded into it.  I've been typing up new subs in a different language. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to see the new subtitles since they are layered right on top of the old ones.  I don't want to lose any more of the picture than necessary so I'd rather not shift the new subtitles to a different place or crop the current file.

Is there a way to just cover the old subtitles underneath?

Hmm, I dont think so? If you were able to black them out then that would take away from the picture. Can't you get an avi file or similar without those subs hardcoded into it?

You can with ASS subtitles. Click on the "Edit style" button on the lower right part of the screen (a pen-like button), open advanved options and under "border" select "Opaque box"

Then save as ASS format. The problem with this approach is that you need a aplayer that properly understands ASS format - and unbfortunately there aren't a lot of them Sad
